AI Cost Ops

FinOps

FinOps Is Mostly Engineering Hygiene

Cloud cost problems rarely arrive as one dramatic mistake. They usually appear as tiny decisions nobody owns: an oversized database, a forgotten environment, a chatty job, a dashboard nobody reads, a retry loop that feels harmless until traffic doubles.

Good FinOps is not about making engineers afraid to ship. It is about giving teams enough visibility to understand the cost of their choices while there is still time to choose differently.

The healthiest teams treat cost like latency or reliability. They make it visible, discuss it without blame, and bake sensible defaults into the platform. Budgets, alerts, tags, rightsizing, and usage reviews are useful, but only when they help engineers make better product decisions.

The goal is simple: build systems that are fast enough, reliable enough, and affordable enough to keep improving. That is less glamorous than a grand cost-cutting program, but it is much more likely to last.
